Grayson Hunt leads Dead Echo, a black ops team, with his comrades Ishi Sato, Rell Julian, and Dr. Whit Oliver, all under the command of Confederation General Victor Sarrano. After discovering Sarrano's corruption, Grayson and his team desert and become pirates. Ten years later, in a drunken rage, Grayson attempts a suicide attack on Sarrano's flagship, causing both ships to crash on the planet Stygia. Over the course of the game, Grayson works with Ishi and Trishka to confront Sarrano, ultimately impaling him but being ejected from Sarrano's ship. Grayson and Trishka escape Stygia in an escape pod as the planet is consumed by a DNA bomb blast. In a post-credits scene, Sarrano is revealed to be alive as a cyborg, and Ishi has survived but is under full control of his AI processor.

In Their Own Story

The air on Stygia tastes of ash and betrayal. Grayson checks the charge on his Leash, the device that can pull enemies toward him or launch them into the air. Below him, the wreckage of the Ulysses smolders. Trishka's voice crackles in his ear, demanding answers about her father. But Grayson knows the truth: he and Dead Echo killed Bryce Novak on Sarrano's orders. He lies, telling her Sarrano was responsible. They fight through waves of enemies, using skillshots to earn points for ammunition and upgrades at dropkits scattered across the planet. When they finally corner Sarrano on his rescue ship, the general hijacks Ishi's body using his own Instinct Leash. Encouraged by Grayson, Ishi wrests back control and takes a bullet meant for Grayson. Enraged, Grayson impales Sarrano on the wall, but Sarrano ejects them back to the surface. They board an unused escape pod from the Ulysses, launching into low orbit as the DNA bomb's explosion propels them into space. Trishka, forgiving Grayson for the mistake in killing her father, asks what he will do about Sarrano escaping. The screen fades to black.

Reader's Guide

Grayson Hunt is equipped with an 'instinct leash' that allows him to pull enemies towards him; an upgrade unlocks the 'Thumper', which launches nearby enemies and explosive barrels into the air. The player can kick enemies or run and slide into them. If an enemy is launched into the air, they go into slow motion, allowing players to perform 'skillshots' that reward points for creative kills. Points are used at 'dropkits' to purchase firearms, ammunition, and upgrades. The game features eight weapons, each with alternate fire modes.
