In Their Own Story

Grayson Hunt leads Dead Echo, a black ops team with comrades Ishi Sato, Rell Julian, and Dr. Whit Oliver, under General Victor Sarrano. After assassinating Bryce Novak, they discover Novak was a civilian reporter documenting Sarrano's corruption. When Sarrano tries to have them killed, Grayson and his team desert and become pirates. Ten years later, the alcoholic Grayson's ship is intercepted by Sarrano's Ulysses near Stygia. In a drunken rage, Grayson attempts a suicide attack, crashing both ships onto Stygia. Ishi is fatally wounded; Dr. Oliver replaces most of Ishi's body with cybernetics, but marauders kill Doc and Rell, leaving Ishi permanently disfigured. Despite Ishi blaming Grayson, they work together to get offworld. They meet Trishka, Novak's daughter, who agrees to help if they rescue Sarrano. Grayson lies about his involvement in Novak's death. They reach Sarrano, who reveals a DNA bomb on the Ulysses designed to wipe out Stygia. Sarrano tricks Grayson into arming the bomb and escapes. Trishka, still alive, rescues them. They confront Sarrano on his rescue ship; Sarrano reveals Grayson killed Novak. Sarrano hijacks Ishi's body via Instinct Leash; Ishi wrests control and takes a bullet for Grayson. Grayson impales Sarrano, but Sarrano ejects Grayson and Trishka. They board an escape pod from the Ulysses; the DNA bomb's explosion propels them into space. Trishka forgives Grayson. In a post-credits scene, Sarrano is alive as a cyborg; Ishi survives under full AI control.

Reader's Guide

Bulletstorm was developed by People Can Fly and Epic Games, published by Electronic Arts. Development began in June 2007 with a roughly three-and-a-half-year cycle. Adrian Chmielarz directed, Cliff Bleszinski designed, and Rick Remender wrote the story. The game was originally envisioned as a cover-based third-person shooter but went through multiple revisions. Pulp magazines, Burnout, Duke Nukem, and Firefly inspired the team. Competitive multiplayer and campaign co-op were removed due to technological constraints. The game released in February 2011 for Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. It received positive reviews for setting, graphics, action, pacing, and gameplay, but was criticized for story, short length, writing, and multiplayer. It sold one million copies by 2013. A remaster, Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition, released in April 2017 for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. A Nintendo Switch version, Bulletstorm: Duke of Switch Edition, released in August 2019. A sequel was put on hold for Gears of War: Judgment. Bulletstorm VR released December 14, 2023.
